Is being lazy a good thing?

You might not be happy in me telling you this, but we humans are a bit lazy. I know it’s difficult for us to admit, but it’s true. There is good news though. I was reading a short article over the weekend, where a physicist explained that they had written a paper proving that the whole universe is lazy too. Objects and things will always find the easiest path to take.

We love Convenience

We could I suppose swap out the word lazy for “convenient”. So I began thinking about how much difference there is between something being convenient and it being inconvenient.

Where I grew up, at the top of the street the footpath curved round to join the next road. Next to the path was a large grassy area. There was a straight muddy path straight across it for those who wanted a faster direct route round the corner. The path must have shaved a good 3 seconds off a journey. Not a significant amount. As I’m walking, I now start looking around at all these “short cuts”, and they’re everywhere.

Thank you Mr Dyson

This then led my thinking off on a tangent. Mrs S has just purchased a new vacuum cleaner. It’s one of those fancy Dyson hand-held cordless ones with the long pole on. I’m not great at housework at the best of times, and although hoovering takes less than 30 minutes to do, I really struggle to get motivated to start it. However, now I have this “no-cord” gadget, my thinking has completely changed. Firstly it charges up in a convenient place (behind the kitchen door), there’s less to think about as it doesn’t need continually plugging and unplugging as I move round the house, it feels quicker to clean a piece of carpet with it being lightweight and not having to be dragged around.

Game Changers

Basically the Dyson’s convenience has made it a game changer, and turned something mundane into (dare I say it) a bit of a joy to do.

Other recent gadgets that have tipped the convenience/inconvenience scales to the positive have been:

-       My new printer. Simple, not fiddly, fast, and can now fit on my desk

-       Using Alexa to take things from my head straight on to me To-do list (see last weeks blog)

-       Finally getting my car hands free kit set up. No more pulling to the side of the road to answer calls.

I’m off to find more convenient/inconvenient conundrums. What are yours? Let me know in the comments.
